Thank you to all who joined us for our Policy Series in February discussing the the National Disability Insurance Scheme (NDIS) and disability policy in Australia.
Young Liberal Update [March 2020]
Last week, we released the first in our series of recruitment videos.
This video features members from all over the State, encouraging young Australians to make their voice heard and get involved with the Party.
If you haven’t already seen it, you can watch the video here.
We have an important role to play in ensuring our Party is in touch with young Australians. We have been active in fighting for issues important to our generation.
Our Policy Committee has provided a submission to the Senate Standing Committee rejecting the Unions' heavy handed approach to small businesses. It has also prepared a paper to be presented to the State and Federal energy ministers on pragmatic ways to take action on climate change. Our work on the need for a fairer tax system for young people has also been quoted in the Federal Financial Relations Review consultation report. If you’d like to get involved in our ongoing policy advocacy initiatives or have other ideas, please let us know.
With our nation facing serious economic challenges, including the continued disaster recovery and the effects of the Coronavirus, our State and Federal Liberal Governments continue to provide steady and stable leadership.
As always, thank you for your continued support of our Liberal cause.
Kind regards,
Chaneg
Young Liberal Update [April 2020]
Your Executive has been working hard to ensure that our Movement continues engaging with its members throughout this period of social distancing.
As you are aware, we have had to postpone events such as Mock Parliament, Young Liberal Council and other scheduled events for March. This also means annual events like Young Liberal Convention may need to be rescheduled.
However, thanks to the wonders of modern technology, we will be holding events like Policy Series and Young Liberal Council online, as well as providing the opportunity to contribute in other ways such as our revived Young Liberal Policy Blog and through Policy Committee submissions.
Stay tuned for upcoming virtual events in the pipeline such as our Liberal Thinking Series, Young Liberal Female Pathways, and Young Liberal Rural and Regional Forum.
Now, more than ever, it is important for the Young Liberal Movement to remain strong advocates for our values of free enterprise, small government and individual liberty.
We face an unprecedented economic crisis caused by a major health crisis. During these extraordinary times, extraordinary measures are necessarily taken up by Governments.
Policies that were unthinkable by Liberal governments just months ago have been implemented in rapid succession. Never before has this amount of money been spent to cushion an economic blow, including $130 billion in wage subsidies.
Our Prime Minister Scott Morrison and our Premier Gladys Berejiklian have provided strong and stable leadership during this time. As a Movement we must do all we can to support their efforts.
However, the economic response will necessarily have a cost. The combined Federal and State debt will reach a staggering $1 trillion, with deficits for the foreseeable future. Our generation will be left with the bill.
This is why it is imperative that the Young Liberals are at the forefront of arguing for policies that will help our economy bounce back from this crisis. Because it is only where there is less tax and regulation on business and where there are thriving global markets that we can hope to have an economic revival that will unleash prosperity and jobs for the future, as well as hope to begin to pay down the huge bill that will be left in the wake of this crisis.
There’s much coming up and I hope that even during this extraordinary time in our national life, you’ll be able to join us.

There will be time during the session for people to ask questions from our panellists.
POLICY COMMITTEE MEETING
WEDNESDAY 15 APRIL, 6:00PM, VIA ZOOM: DIAL IN DETAILS UPON RSVP
Policy Committee will be meeting to discuss motions for the upcoming virtual Young Liberal Council as well as to consider how the Movement can advocate for good policy in light of COVID-19. In particular, the Committee will consider from a youth perspective what Liberal governments should be doing post-crisis to help our economy bounce back.
As always, all members who are interested are welcome to join the elected and appointed members of Policy Committee. If you'd like to be involved, please indicate your interest to Hugo Robinson.
NSW YOUNG LIBERAL POLICY BLOG
The NSW Young Liberal Policy Blog is back!
The Policy Blog provides all members with the opportunity to showcase their opinions and policy ideas. Articles that are accepted will be published on the NSW Young Liberal website and social media.
These articles can later be published in the annual Young Liberal Liberal Review magazine, distributed to campuses, Party members and MPs.
During this time of social distancing, this is a great way for members to continue to engage in the battle of ideas.
LIBERAL THINKING SERIES
IN MAY, DATE TBA, FIRST SESSION VIA ZOOM
As announced previously, we have been working on developing a series that will give members a good foundation on Liberal thought and the history of the Liberal Party's contribution to reform. The sessions are planned to be interactive and to help equip members to apply Liberal thought to contemporary policy problems. Each session will be delivered by a special guest.
Whilst we would have wanted our first session to be in person, we are pleased to announce that the first session of our Liberal Thinking Series will be held via Zoom. Expressions of interest are now open and spots are limited.
The first session will focus on Classical Liberal Thought, Socialism and the 'Post Capitalists' with Dr Peta Seaton AM. Dr Seaton has been a key contributor to Coalition policy for decades.
The session will provide an overview of the origins and evolution of the classical liberal tradition in public policy including Adam Smith, Friedrich Hayek, Milton Friedman, Bruce Smith, Winston Churchill, Margaret Thatcher, Calvin Coolidge and Ronald Reagan. It will also ask whether Socialism as an ideology is dead and still relevant to a modern Liberal narrative. It will consider modern concerns about increasing inequality in Australian society and how the Liberal narrative can address this.
Other planned sessions in this series include:
Session 2: Sir Robert Menzies and the Creation of the Liberal Party
Session 3: Federal Economic and Productivity Reform
Session 4: Policy Achievements of NSW State Liberal Governments
Session 5: Frameworks for Thinking
Session 6: Managing Barriers to Reform and Preparing for Tomorrow
Please send all expressions of interest to Natalie Hissey.
As our Premier has said many times, the Young Liberals serve as the conscience of our Party. I trust that your continued commitment and conviction during these times will keep alive the flame of liberalism for the next generation of Liberals and ensure good policy in the future.
Please do not hesitate to contact me if you have any questions about the operation of the Party during this period, or if you have other ideas.
This is a time of great uncertainty. But as we approach Easter, a time when we remember that darkness doesn't have the final say, let us live in hope and with love and care for our fellow Australians doing it tough.
Together, we will get through this.
Kind regards,
Chaneg Torres

You can read about the inquiry and the terms of reference here.

In the first installment, we will be hearing ClubsNSW Manger – Policy & Government, Anthony Trimarchi talk about challenges that the Clubs industry faces in NSW and how industry and government work together (and some times don’t) on many policy and regulatory issues.

POLICY SERIES: THE HISTORY AND FUTURE OF THE DRIES WITH SENATOR DEAN SMITH
19 NOVEMBER 2019, 6:30PM, LOCATION UPON RSVP
To kick off the first of our Policy Series, we will be joined by Senator Dean Smith to discuss "The history and future of the Dries".
Senator Smith is the Chair of the Society of Modest Members in Federal Parliament, a group dedicated to advancing the principles of economic rationalism.
Considered one of the most important political and intellectual movements in 20th century Australia, the Modest Members or ‘Dries’ operated as a counterculture within the Liberal Party. They drove free market thinking, deregulation, private enterprise, and opposed the post-war Keynesian consensus, high tariff barriers, and the restrictiveness of the industrial relations system.
In 2011, the Society of Modest Members was revived within the Liberal Party. It includes Dean Smith, Jason Falinski, Tim Wilson, Scott Ryan, Ted O'Brien, Ben Morton, Amanda Stoker, Trent Zimmerman and Jane Hume.
Join us for an insightful and informative night!
Please RSVP to Policy Officer Deyi Wu.
POLICY COMMITTEE & FEDERAL FINANCIAL RELATIONS REVIEW SUBMISSION
EXPRESSIONS OF INTEREST
The NSW Young Liberals Policy Committee will be considering the Federal Financial Relations Review Discussion Paper released by the NSW Government.
This Review, commissioned by NSW Treasurer Dominic Perrottet MP, is one of the most significant opportunities for tax reform our country has had in a long time. With the costs of services set to outstrip State revenue, and with NSW having to rely on inefficient taxes that dampen growth, this is a conversation we need to have.
Our generation in particular has to bear the consequences of an over-reliance on stamp duty (which makes property unaffordable) and payroll tax (which keeps young people out of a job).
If you are interested in contributing to the NSW Young Liberal’s submission to this review, please send your expression of interest to myself and the Chair of Policy Committee.
You can read the report here.
PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT: INTERNSHIP PROGRAM
APPLICATIONS OPEN
Applications are now open for internships with Liberal State and Federal MPs.
If you are interested in gaining professional experience with senior Liberal figures, please fill in this application form with your email and 250 words outlining your policy interests and why you would benefit from interning with a Member of Parliament.
Please contact Professional Development Director Natalie Hissey if you have any further questions. Natalie will be in contact with further information if you are successful.
YOUNG LIBERAL MAGAZINE
APPLICATIONS OPEN FOR CONTRIBUTORS
We are taking expressions of interest for opinion pieces for the annual Liberal Review magazine.
This magazine is distributed at campuses around the State during Orientation Week, will be published online, and sent to all NSW State and Federal Liberal Members of Parliament.
This is a great opportunity to showcase your writing skills and put forward your ideas in the public sphere.
If you are interested in being a contributor, please contact magazine editor Liam Kiss to pitch your idea.
Kind regards,
Chaneg Torres, President
